Exotic bungalows set in a garden facing the sea – Nice authentic decoration of wood and stone – you may connect to the world if you wish: TV in room, phone, internet – however you will not feel the need – Thw magic of the hotel will work on you
My wife and I took a short break (5 nights six days) in Rodrigues from 31 10 to 06 11 and chose this hotel. We wanted a “proper hotel”this time and not a guest house or maison d’hotes as there are many in Rodrigues (although we quite like those as well). We also wanted to avoid the larger hotels and crowds and Tekoma came warmly recommended by friends and our travel agent. We live on a tropical island and are well travelled hoteliers, so consider ourselves quite discerning when it comes to boutique hotels and island getaways. We were very impressed by the hotel, the location, the three beaches, the pool, the room, the cuisine but above all the people and their kind, discreet service. The half boar formula comes with a dinner menu which changes every day, not a single boring or repetitive dish over six dinners. The Chef did his classes as it were with Nizam Peeroo, recognised Mauritian Chef of the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis, Mauritius, who was trained himself by Mrs Dalais, a grand Lady of Mauritian cuisine. Cocktails were great (we drink Mohito and Pina Colada). Rooms are well appointed and each in its own bungalow, quite set apart from the rest, and set in a nice garden – although Rodrigues was suffering quite a drought those days and the garden cannot be described as lush. Water supply is no issue as the hotel operates its own desalination plant – which should be mandatory in Rodrigues. The views, from the rooms, pool, reception, restaurant, terrace, are simply stunning. Although there’s quite a lot to see and do in Rodrigues (one does need a car), it is hard to choose between going out and just enjoying the hotel and its beaches. There are great long walks to take, east or west bound, on well marked paths. Anything is 20- 35 minutes away by car. Rodrigues can be windy in winter but don’t let anyone of those “windy” grumpy comments deter you. If we have two minor suggestion to make, this would be to have a larger and better furnished bar and lounge area and to play more authentic Rodrigues music and less house or jazzy (though pleasant) stuff. A word of caution to the hurried and stressed out “western” traveller: Expect to unwind, totally and do NOT expect fast, European or American style service. This is Rodrigues after all, so let go… So, GREAT stay in a GREAT cosy little place. Go for it!
The hotel is located on the east side of the island, and is subject to wind, but that is certainly not negative as, going in summer makes the temperature much more tolerable.
The set up as individual bungalows is really great as it gives you a sense of privacy all the time, and the hotel is always calm. Even at breakfast and dinner in the restaurant, as it seems that everyone has agreed that being in a calm environment is why we went there.
The staff are caring, always smiling, non intrusive and remember your preferences after the 1st day (tea/coffee and mostly our added butter requests).
The room is spacious, well maintained and cleaned in the morning, plus there is a turn down service too. And the wardrobe is just huge (at least for us in Rm 17). Loved the outdoor bathtub, though we did not use it. The infinity pool during the low tides. The huge garden and the beach beds for resting.
Breakfast is buffet style with everything one could imagine from fresh fruits, juice, cereals, pastries, and hot plates with eggs, bacon, sausage.
Dinner is a 3 course menu with a choice between 2 starters, 2 main courses and dessert. and never repetitive.
We spent most of our short stay on the east coast itself, walking along the beach to the criques or beach restaurants for lunch.
And the 15 minutes spa treatment offered was really enjoyable.
The staff are all very helpful and a pleasure to deal with, all having that gorgeous sunshine smile and they do remind you to relax). My fiancee even managed to get them to make me a surprise birthday cake for my birthday. Just sooooo sweet.
We will definitely go again. it was worth every cent and every minute spent there.
